Many problems with missing solutions

Post by Field Mouse »

Hi, recently I began solving goproblems again and I met TONS of problems on the site that have missing solutions. Mainly I am talking about the problems from vougalar, who apparently copied some books to the site. My feeling is that maybye 2/3 of his problems are unfinished (maybye I am wrong as I havent seen all of them but from those I saw it is a really large portion). Solving the problems correctly and then dealing with all the wrongs just because somebody didnt check the problem.. is okay to some degree (I also had to repair many of my problems), but when it happens in such a large scale it gets just too frustrating. I just have to solve the problem, get it wrong, then see what one var the creator marked correct and then refresh the page and follow the marked path...
I definitely do not have time to repair 1 000 goproblems from this one user. My question is - what should I do?

Should I:
- mark and comment on almost every problem of some authors and hope that the creator will try to fix them? (this way the problem can stay on the site for a looong time, but there will be more problems on the site)
- delete the invalid problems so that there will be only valid problems on the site? (this way it might be quite frustrating for the author, but the site will retain some quality. I am not sure if I can just deactivate the problem so that the author can reactivate it later or the problem will be deleted forever. As there are really many problems on the site I think this is affordable)
- do domething else? :)

I am now in mood of deactivating the problems with too many missing solutions, but I know this happened to me some time ago with my philosophical-heart-problem and I wasnt able to reactivate it and had to build it again, which sucked. If there was a way to deactivate a problem so that the author could easily edit it and reactivate it again I think this would be the best solution. But as it would mean deactivating about 10 % of the problems on the site I still dont want it to be a single mans decision :)
Cheers, FM

Ah, Im happy you read this. Would you be so kind as to look again at your goproblems and repair them? I believe not all 1 800 are missing their solutions, my guess is that 1000 of them are.
Thanks, FM

I am going through all of them and flagging things I feel are incorrect. I'm 400 of the way through, and I've probably only flagged a dozen, though. Usually it's a problem of move ordering, I've found some moves actually work earlier because they are miai.

What bothers me is that all of those problems have duplicates on the site. Especially when some of them have missing solutions, so when I actually solve one and REDO the solution I lose rank because the second one doesn't mark the same solution as solved!

I know too little about go to find all the variations, very often find difficult to folow comments on variations.
There is one thing however that is unfair the 1st 900 are from Cho Chikun easy series and no way the variations are missing. Some of them do need minor corrections but 99% of them are ok.

Really?

because this one is missing a valid solution (see comment in the variation) and it's a DDK problem

That's not a "minor correction", that's a missing correct path. That's the biggest problem you can possibly have along with its mirror image "correct path is actually wrong".

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy this problem set. I'm just baffled that you think 99% of them are correct when I already said I found a dozen that were wrong among just the first 400 I looked at. And that's just what I found, there are comments on your problems by other people that indicate missing correct paths that most people don't find because they play the main line.

Another example:

http://goproblems.com/prob.php3?id=18397

I was staring at the problem trying to find out what it's asking me to do. The solution was to add a useless move to "kill" white when white was already dead. I figured out the INTENTION of the problem, but there is nothing white can do against the penultimate move of black, so it can be left as-is. It's a different problem, but it's still a large flaw when some people won't be able to guess what incorrect move the problem maker intends for you to make.

D18 kills right away
E18 also seems to kill

Every single move except for B19 kills, but the problem is missing two solutions so it's rated 4 dan
