I would expect a continuation like this. Black forces G17 before protecting J18. White may be able to capture G17 in a ladder, but then at least Black can use a ladder breaker as a free move somewhere. This result is clearly inferior to the solution. Should Black play J18 straight away then White will protect the cut at G16 and Black wouldn't have the aji of a ladder breaker at all.
