@JéricoBian I just find myself uneasy with the claim that the second solution is less "efficient". Perhaps I'm just not as strong as the author, but from my perspective they're being too opinionated. Both solutions are, imo, equally valid, and it's more important to eventually learn to be flexible.

At your rank I understand what you mean, this is probably a little out of range to build mental models from a problem of this level independently at this stage. But just stick with it, chew on each move, explore the alternative moves. Things that seemed obtuse start to click as you review the problems.
If the solution of a problem seems to be a ladder, I usually also think about what would happen if one would try a net - and vice versa. In this example, a net clearly would fail, not only as a net, but it also could not lead to another form of a ladder, because White would be able to play at F12.

However, starting a ladder by playing at F8 is atari, so White needs to answer or she would lose her four stones. This can also serve as an example for the concept of sente (in this case a sente move through atari, but atari ain't always a sente move). Black puts pressure on White, so White must respond and thus Black is in control - unless White finds another move elsewhere on the board, that threatens to make more points than she would lose through giving up her four stones, and this way takes sente.

Sente appears to be such an important and interesting concept (that actually matters not only in Go, but generally in strategic interactions).

This is a beginner problem and likely always will be a 30k- or 29k-problem. But if one takes some time to reflect a little bit, it teaches a very important concept, that is relevant in advanced problems.

Sometimes there is wisdom in simple things. We just need to take a close look and start thinking.
