I am a Hungarian radio astronomer and went to university in Japan. I was introduced to the game during a month-long winter observation session deep in the mountains of middle Japan. We were using a gigantic radio telescope on the outskirts of a tiny village, with the observation lodge surrounded by meters of snow in -20 degree temperatures. Fortunately the inside was warm, observations were long and there was not much to do for 90% of the time except to play the game. I am also an avid practitioner of kendo. We have a saying in kendo "文武不岐" which conveys the idea that the mind and the body has to be trained together, therefore I think these two arts–go and kendo–complement each other very well.
